Ukrainian soldiers guarding peace

A briefing was held at the DIU HQ dedicated to the “Peacekeeping activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: history and now”.

The International UN Peacekeepers Day is celebrated annually in Ukraine on May 29, in accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 374 of April 30, 2003.

In preparation for this holiday, a briefing was held at the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine. Volodymyr Sobora, officer at the Department of peacekeeping operations and international cooperation, Joint Operational Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine made a report. Lt. Col. Sobora told the audience about the existing forms of peacekeeping operations, covered basic articles of the UN Charter and other legal acts that regulate peacekeeping activities of the Ukrainian military.



In his report, Volodymyr Sobora pointed out that over 25 thousand Ukrainian soldiers took part in various PKOs all over the world since 1992. Our peacekeepers’ operations geography covers Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. 49 Ukrainian soldiers were killed during peacemaking and peacekeeping. Our peacekeepers captured over 14 thousand transgressors, seized a significant amount of weapons and ammunition, reconstructed a number of important civilian infrastructure facilities e.g. schools, hospitals, water and electrical facilities. In addition, they transported nearly 24 metric tons of humanitarian aid.

DIU personnel thanked Lt. Col. Sobora for his comprehensive report and in his person congratulated Ukrainian peacekeepers on the occasion of the upcoming holiday.
