Place of meeting: Elevation Point 142,4
May 14, 2009 // "Narodna Armiya"
Upon Lyutizh bridge-head, where the fierce combats over Kyiv were taking place during the Great Patriotic War, intelligence veterans were traditionally greeted by the leaders of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine on the occasion of another anniversary of the Victory. The celebrations took place near the “Elevation Point 142,4” memorial.
- This is the day when one feels particularly awed with the greatness of the state, people, and our history. The Ukrainian nation has paid an extremely high price for the Victory, said Deputy Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Major General Vyacheslav Onysko. Nearly eight million victims! Those are severed lives of sons and daughters of Ukraine, those are mothers’ and widow's bitter tears, the orphanhood of children. Keeping the blessed memory of the fallen, we turn our eyes on the veterans of the Great Patriotic War. Our most sincere respect, our deepest gratitude, and our kowtow to you, dear Victory’s soldiers!
This year the celebrations were attended by such intelligence veterans as Hero of the Soviet Union Major General, ret., Luke Sushko; Major General, ret., Volodymyr Kuzovenko; Lieutenant, ret., Petro Kravchenko; Ensign, ret., Ivan Natyaga, as well as Claudia Moskalevich and Olga Kozyreva. Unfortunately, because of the health aggravation, some veterans weren't able to attend the celebrations. Among them were a living legend, Hero of Ukraine Major General, ret., Eugene Bereznyak who had recently celebrated his 95th anniversary; Colonel, ret., Grygoriy Vartanov, and Vira Aksan.
Students of Podol District metropolitan comprehensive school No. 9 and Novopetrivtsi School of Arts, along with representatives of various veterans' organisations also greeted the veterans on the occasion.
