Commemoration of the 92nd anniversary of Kruty battle

February 1, 2010
DIU-subordinate units honour the memory of Kruty heroes.

Every January 29, Kruty Heroes Commemoration Day is celebrated in Ukraine. It was on that day 92 years ago that the young defenders of newly-created Ukrainian People’s Republic wrote – with their blood – a new heroic page in the history of Ukrainian struggle for independence.

On January 29, 1918, over 300 cadets, students engaged in an unequal fight with enemy forces, superior in numbers, arms and skills near Kruty railway station. They fought vigorously for the right of Ukrainian people to live in their own state.

Having sacrificed their lives in that unequal encounter the boys reminded that the Cossacks’ freedom-loving valour has not died away in the Ukrainian land, still standing up for the sake of independence. On March 17, 1918, the bodies of 27 brave fighters that fell at Kruty were brought to Kyiv to be buried at Askold’s Grave. Their feat became an icon of patriotism, courage, ardent love and allegiance to Motherland.

This year, on the occasion of the 92nd anniversary of Kruty battle, cultural, educational events took place in the DIU-subordinate units in accordance with the January 20, 2010 Resolution No. 97-p of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

Within the framework of commemorative events, thematic book exhibitions were held in the units’ libraries; rooms of Combat Glory hosted expositions dedicated to the struggle of the Ukrainian nation for independence in the early 20th century.
