Nationwide celebration of the Great Victory

A commemoration ceremony dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory organized by the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine on May 5, 2010, took place upon Lyutizh beachhead.

A comprehensive celebration programme prepared for the Great Patriotic War veterans on this day started with an outdoor meeting near the Hill 142.4 memorial. Agency’s personnel, veterans stood on the ground soaked with blood of thousands soldiers who liberated the Ukrainian capital from fascist invaders and paid tribute to the ones who won the freedom for our Motherland in fierce battles.  


DIU brass, war veterans, guests, and pupils of DIU-sponsored schools attended the event. Noteworthy are the agency’s purposeful veterans search and support activities that allowed inviting reconnaissance veterans who participated in the Dnipro assault crossing and the liberation of Ukraine.

The atmosphere created by the combat materiel located on site enhanced the symbolism of the meeting upon Lyutizh beachhead. In addition, personnel were dressed in war-era outfits and carried same weapons. The event was accompanied by major war radio broadcasts featuring reports about the beginning of the war, liberation of Ukrainian cities, and Victory. Such setting allowed creating a special solemn and respect-filled atmosphere of the event dedicated to the victors.

Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Victor Hvozd made a speech before the participants of the event. He greeted everyone with the anniversary of the Great Victory, saluted the feat of the liberators. “We will always remember those who we owe our freedom and the opportunity to live as masters in our own land,” General Hvozd said.

Among the others who spoke that day were representatives of the veteran organizations, government, and military.


In the end of the meeting, the DIU Chief presented the “65 years since the Victory in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic war” medals to veterans in accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 474/2010 of April 2, 2010. The meeting closed with the minute of silence, floral tribute near the Hill 142.4 memorial, and military volleys salute.  

Later, veterans and other guests of the event had an opportunity to enjoy the military brass band defile, and a modern arms exhibition. In addition, DIU’s “Oberih” ensemble wearing war-period outfits performed war-era songs.



The concert was followed by a holiday lunch featuring the famous soldier’s kasha.
