Today, on September 4, on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, a gala meeting was held in the Central Officer House of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kyiv.

The celebrations were attended by President of Ukraine – Supreme Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko, acting Minister of Defence of Ukraine Valeriy Ivashchenko, leaders, officers and veterans of our country’s Defence Intelligence.

The intelligence officers were greeted on the occasion of their professional holiday by the Head of Ukrainian state.

The Defence Intelligence always was, is and – I’m sure – will always be a model of patriotism, loyalty to Ukraine and fidelity to duty. I highly appreciate the efforts of the DIU, its every serviceman and civilian employee, Victor Yushchenko said.

On behalf of the Ukrainian state the President thanked the Defence Intelligence officers, civilian employees and veterans for their devoted service and high quality of their work.

Without your work, without successful counteraction to national security threats and challenges we can’t speak of safe life for every Ukrainian citizen or the state. Your primary weapon is your intellect, your ability to pursue a preemptive tactic, to guarantee early prediction of national security threats and challenges, he emphasized.

The President also expressed his appreciation of the DIU achievements that enable our successful participation in the peacekeeping operations, international war on terrorism, extremism and illicit arms traffic.

Your active part in the efforts on releasing Ukrainian citizens from pirate captivity deserves a special distinction. Your actions prove that the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine is a mature and fully-fledged agency with considerable potential capable to respond timely and effectively to all modern challenges, the President said in his speech.

According to the Supreme Commander in Chief, under today’s new external conditions we must be prepared for any possible scenario both at our borders and within a broad world context. The Head of state thereby tasked the intelligence agency with several duties of exceptional importance.

First, you have to mobilize all necessary means to provide professional projection and ensure prevention of any action capable of presenting an actual threat to our state, its integrity and inviolability of borders. Second, it is talked of constant monitoring and prediction of security processes in our region. Third, it is necessary to carry on the actions aimed at supporting the Ukrainian course towards the Euro-Atlantic integration and ensuring our active participation in the European security strategy formation and development. Fourth is the constant support and facilitation of our participation in the UN peacekeeping operations, as well as ensuring close cooperation with foreign partners in countering the global and regional security challenges i.e. the problem of piracy, separatism and extremism. Fifth, I draw particular attention upon the necessity of enhancing the security and protection of health of our citizens abroad, including human trafficking, the President emphasized.

In addition, the President tasked the Defence Intelligence with establishing new effective forms of cooperation with the world’s most advanced countries, which should enhance Ukraine’s ability to respond to both known and new threats.

In our turn, we will be improving your technical capabilities and means for further qualitative equipping – the process which is already under way. I’m convinced that every important task assigned to you by the state will be performed by you with honour. I believe in your high professionalism, knowledge and loyalty to Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko said.

In conclusion of his speech the Supreme Commander in Chief wished all the Defence Intelligence personnel and every Defence Intelligence veteran strong health, happiness and good.

During the celebrations, Decree of the President of Ukraine of September 3, 2009 has been read out on establishing the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine official Emblem, its description and image.

For major personal contribution to the cause of protection of the national interests of Ukraine and exemplary service, several Defence Intelligence officers were promoted to generals according to the Presidential Decree.

In addition, for honest service to Ukraine, impeccable military service, high professionalism demonstrated in carrying out special assignments, and on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, a large number of intelligence officers were granted Commendations of the President of Ukraine.
